Reigning women's champion Arellano University eliminated Jose Rizal University from the race for the last semis seat.
Defending champion and semifinals-bound Arellano University sent Jose Rizal University to an early vacation, eliminating the Lady Bombers in the race for the last Final Four seat in the 91st NCAA women’s volleyball competition Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Chiefs easily scalped the Lady Bombers in 61 minutes with a straight-set 25-21, 25-23, 25-19 win to improve to 7-1 and solidify their bid for a twice-to-beat advantage in the next round.
It was Arellano’s middles that did most of the damage with Christine Joy Rosario and Shirley Salamagos scoring 17 and 14 points, respectively.
Rosario nailed all her points from attacks while Salamagos got 12 from kills and two from blocks.
Jovielyn Prado and Danna Henson scored nine markers each for the Lady Chiefs, who will close the elims on Friday against College of St. Benilde.
Rosalie Pepito and Shola Alvarez scored 14 each for the Lady Bombers.
With JRU bowing out of the race, the battle for the no. 4 spot narrowed down between the Perpetual Help Lady Altas and Lyceum of the Philippines University Lady Pirates.
The Lady Altas collected its fifth win in seven games as they downed the San Beda Lionesses, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22, to remain at solo No. 4.
Jamela Suyat led Perpetual with 16 markers, Ana Diocareza got 13 while Cindy Imbo contributed with 10 points.
San Beda closed its season with a 3-6 record.
A win by the Lady Altas in their last two assignments against Emilio Aguinaldo College on Friday and Letran on Sunday will give Perpetual the last semis ticket.
The Lady Pirates (4-4), meanwhile are hard-pressed to win their last elims assignment against the undefeated San Sebastian Lady Stags on Friday. They also have to hope that Perpetual won’t get its sixth win to force a tie at 5-4.
