MVP numbers --- Grethcel Soltones delivered the goods to keep San Sebastian College's bid of advancing outright to the championship round alive.
It all boils down to their marquee matchup against the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers.
The San Sebastian College Lady Stags hurdled their second to the last assignment in the 91st NCAA women’s volleyball elimination round to keep their pristine record intact and inched a win closer for an outright championship seat ticket and a thrice-to-beat advantage.
Leaning once again to reigning Most Valuable Player Gretchcel Soltones, the Lady Stags recovered from a shaky start to shut the semifinal door on Lyceum of the Philippines University Lady Pirates, 20-25, 25-13, 25-11, 25-14, and notched their eighth win in as many outings Thursday at The Arena in San Juan.
Soltones once again showed her dangerous form, pounding 24 of the Lady Stags’ 58 spikes while adding three service aces in her 27 total points to pace SSC-R, which not only showed LPU the exit door but also gave idle Perpetual Help Lady Altas a free ride to the semis.
Nikka Dalisay added 16 markers, all from kills, while Katherine Villegas had 11 for the Lady Stags, who will take on a tough end of elims customer in the Lady Blazers on Sunday to complete the sweep that will propel SSC-R straight to the championship round carrying a thrice-to-beat advantage.
With setter Vira Guillema distributing the offense, SSC-R head coach Roger Gorayeb is confident that the team will be able to reach their goal of making a shortcut to the Finals.
“Hindi na nakakarga sa isang tao 'yung opensa, lahat nagko-contribute,” said Gorayeb.
The Lady Stags handed the Lady Pirates their fifth loss in nine games, closing their season in fifth to sixth spot tied with Jose Rizal University.
Grenlen Malapit was the only LPU player in double figures with 15 points.
Meanwhile, the Mapua Lady Cardinals finally barged in the win column in their last assignment of the season to avoid a winless season by outlasting the Letran Lady Knights, 25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 15-25, 16-14, for a 1-8 card.
The Lady Knights absorbed their eighth straight loss in as many outing. Letran will take on Perpetual on Sunday to finish their season.
In the men's division, the Pirates downed the Stags, 24-26, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21, to improve to 4-5 slate while pulling SSC-R to 3-5 card.
