EAC shoots for the crown, Perpetual guns for a decider
Emilio Aguinaldo College goes for the jugular against Perpetual Help in Game 2 of their 91st NCAA men's volleyball best-of-three Finals series.

The defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals zero in on finishing off the Perpetual Help Altas for their second straight title Friday in Game 2 of the best-of-three 91st NCAA men’s volleyball Finals series at The Arena in San Juan.

Head coach Rodrigo Palmero doesn’t want the Generals to give the Altas an opening to mount a comeback in the series.

His marching order: End it in Game 2.

“Hindi kami nagpapakasigurado pero kailangan naming manalo na (sa Game 2),” said Palmero.

Opening serve is set at 2:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 and ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream at sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/ncaa.

Behind the 22 points of reigning Most Valuable Player Howard Mojica, the Generals defeated the Altas, 25-2 14-25, 25-14, 25-16, in the series opener last Tuesday.

It was EAC’s first win in a championship series against Perpetual after getting swept by the Altas in their first two Finals meetings in Season 88 and 89.

“Mataas ang respeto ko sa Perpetual kasi dalawang taon namin silang nakalaban noong nagsisimula pa lang kami,” added Palmero, who will also bank on Kerth Melliza, Hariel Doguna and Israel Encina.

“Alam ko na kahit anong mangyari, hindi ’yan bumibitaw sa laban. Kaya I keep on saying sa mga players ko na kailangan nilang galingan pa and maghanda parati.”

But Perpetual is looking to write a different story.

“Sinabi ko sa mga players ko na ‘yung problema harapin natin to bounce back by Friday,” said Altas coach Sammy Acaylar. “Hindi pa naman tapos e, meron pang isa. Kasi kapag nanalo kami ng isa magkakaroon ng panibagong pag-iisip ang kalaban namin.”

Game 3, if necessary, is on Tuesday.

Brothers Rey and Relan Taneo, John Patrick Ramos and Bonjomar Castel need to step up their game to save the Las Pinas-based squad’s bid to regain the title they lost last year.

Meanwhile, reigning champion Perpetual Help guns for the title-clincher against the EAC Brigadiers in the juniors championship series Game 2.

The Junior Altas waylaid the EAC Brigadiers, 25-13, 25-18, 25-16, in their best-of-three series opener.
