University of Perpetual Help swept the best-of-three juniors championship series against Emilio Aguinaldo College for its second straight title.
University of Perpetual Help completed a best-of-three series sweep of Emilio Aguinaldo College Friday in Game 2 of the 91st NCAA juniors volleyball Finals to hoist its second straight title and eighth overall crown.
The Junior Altas banked on the steady hands of Finals Most Valuable Player Jody Severo and Darwin Salopaso to carry Perpetual past the gritty Brigadiers, 25-21, 22-25, 19-25, 25-16, 15-11, at The Arena in San Juan.
Severo and Salopaso, who smashed the championship-clinching off the block hit, scored 17 points each to lead the Las Pinas-based squad while Ivan Encila finished with 13 markers to deny the former three-time champion Brigadiers a chance to regain the title they lost last year.
The Junior Altas crawled out of a 1-2 match deficit to force a decider. The trio of Salopaso, Severo and Encila delivered the much-needed points to help Perpetual pull away in the middle of the fifth set after a tight start.
Encila’s attack in the middle pushed Perpetual’s advantage to 13-8 but EAC fought back to cut their deficit to 11-13. Brigadier Michael Imperial committed a service error and Salopaso sealed the match with his hit in the right corner.
Cee-jay Hicap and Ralph Pitogo had 17 points each while Bhim Diones and Ederson Rebusora chipped in 11 and 10 markers, respectively, in a lost cause for the Brigadiers, who were beaten in straight sets, 25-13, 25-18, 25-16, in their series opener last Tuesday.
