STAYING ALIVE --- University of Perpetual Help tied the best-of-three championship series, 1-1, gainst the defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College.
University of Perpetual Help survived to fight another day.
With their backs against the wall, the Altas fought its way back after a bad start to force a decider in their best-of-three series against the defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, walking away with a 20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 win in Game 2 of the 91st NCAA men’s volleyball Finals at The Arena in San Juan Friday.
Rey Taneo Jr. scored 16 points, Ranideen Abcede had 14 points while Bonjomar Castel and Manuel Doliente combined for 16 markers for Perpetual, which bounced back from a 22-25, 25-14, 14-25, 16-25, loss in the series opener last Tuesday – the Las Pinas-based squad’s first championship game defeat against the team that they swept in the Finals of Season 88 and 89.
Game 3 is on Tuesday.
Reigning Most Valuable Player Howard Mojica scored 22 points – 20 coming off kills - while Hariel Doguna and Israel Encina contributed 13 and 10 markers, respectively, for EAC.
Perpetual built a solid wall in front of the net and gave Mojica a hard time to earn his points. The Altas had 11 kill blocks with four coming from Abcede and received 35 free points off the Generals’ errors.
“Ang ginawa ko sa option one itinapat ko si Bonjomar at lahat ng malalaki ko sa harapan para lang mabantayan si Mojica,” said head coach Sammy Acaylar.
Perpetual went off to a hot start in the third set after equalizing in the second frame, burying EAC to 6-0 before holding off the repeated comeback attempts of the Generals for a 2-1 match lead.
With the tide turning on their favor, the Altas marched in the fourth set brimming with confidence against the fading Generals, who played catch up in the frame and falling behind by as large as 22-14.
