MVP Soltones leads Lady Stags to 3rd Beach Volleyball title
Gretchel Soltones and the Lady Stags together with the Mapua Cardinals and the San Sebastian high school team, champions of the NCAA Season 91 Beach Volleyball tournaments.

Most Valuable Player Gretchel Soltones had no plans of losing another championship.

Down one set to the previously undefeated Viray sisters of San Beda College in the winner-take-all finals, Soltones carried San Sebastian to a comeback 14-21, 21-9, 15-6 win in the NCAA Season 91 Women's Volleyball tournament at Subic, Zambales Sunday.

It was the Lady Stags' third straight title as they denied the talented Mendiola-based twins a chance at a perfect season.

Reserve Alyssa Eroa, filling in for the injured Dangie Encarnacion, provided ample support but it was Soltones, the reigning back-to-back indoor volleyball MVP that carried the load as she dominated the second and third sets.

"Masyado kasi kaming tahimik nung first set so nung second sinabi ko na kailangan natin manalo dito," Soltones told ABS-CBN Sports. "Nandito na tayo eh, tiwala lang talaga sa sarili."

Inspirations like both of her parents and supporters who came all the way to Subic also helped Soltones power the Lady Stags to yet another title.

The Lady Red Spikers, who swept the elimination round including a tough three-set win over San Sebastian, breezed through the first set, 21-14.

However, after Soltones started to take over the match and with timely hits by Eroa, coupled with the Viray twins gambling on several down-the-line hits, the Lady Stags would go on the secure the three-peat rather handily.

In men's play, the Mapua Cardinals proved to be the steadier duo as they upset a fancied Perpetual Help, 21-19, 21-18, to win the school's first Beach Volleyball title.

Behind MVP Paul Cuzon and Philip Magalay, the Cardinas pulled away early in both sets before holding on in the endto outlast brothers Relan and Rey Taneo of the Altas.

Over at the Juniors division, San Sebastian made it two out of three for the Stags as they dethrone the EAC Brigadiers in three sets, 20-22, 21-19, 15-13.
