GREENER PASTURES. JJ Domingo is all set to lead CSB to victory.
Jonathan Grey proved to be quite the shining star for College of St. Benilde a year ago.
However, Grey’s individual greatness did not at all translate into collective greatness as the Blazers experienced quite the underwhelming campaign.
Now in the upcoming season, their shining star is long gone and yet the Taft-based team are nothing but confident that they will do better. “Andaming nawala sa amin at malaki yung kailangan naming punan, pero sa nakikita ko naman, kaya namin,” JJ Domingo said.
He then continued, “’Di katulad last year na we relied on Grey lang, itong team ngayon, we rely on everybody.”
At the forefront of that effort from everybody is second-year guard Domingo who has been challenged to quickly rediscover the form that made him one of the best high school players back when he was in Far Eastern University-Diliman.
Assuring his squad and their faithful, the Bulacan native said he has long been preparing for his time in the spotlight. As he put it, “Last year pa lang, before mag-graduate si Grey, nire-ready ko na sarili ko.”
Still, Domingo acknowledged that his newer and bigger role, especially only in his sophomore season, isn’t coming easy. “Pero it took a couple of months bago ko matanggap na ako yung next face ng CSB,” he said.
The 20-year-old’s hardships aren’t lost on his coach, Gabby Velasco. “He’s pressuring himself too much. Iniisip na niya masyadong siya ang take charge guy,” he said.
While the CSB mentor has been reminding his guard to avoid rushing things, he has no doubt that the latter will only live up to the expectations of the former. “Ang advise ko sa kanya, you have to let the game come to you,” he said.
He also added, “He’s still young, but he will mature in time.”
Indeed, only time will tell if Domingo will be able to fill Grey’s shoes, or even simply reach the heights he did back in the Juniors division. Nonetheless, he said he isn’t worrying about any of that and just wants to help his team in winning as he said, “Ayokong tawaging next Grey. Gusto kong makilala nila ako as JJ Domingo, na napapagaling ko yung mga kasama ko.”
He then continued, “Capable ako to score, but they need me more as a leader.”
