GIVE THANKS. After a motorcycle accident just three weeks ago, Michael Calisaan is all cleared to play in the NCAA.

When asked by ABS-CBN Sports how he was doing, San Sebastian College-Recoletos’ Michael Calisaan responded, “Okay na ako. Handang-handa na ako.”

While a seemingly usual answer for most, those two sentences actually mean much to the Golden Stags and their faithful.

Calisaan, the third-year do-it-all forward widely-assumed to now be Recto’s main man, got himself in a vehicular accident more than three weeks ago. While enjoying the fiesta in his hometown Sta. Rita, Pampanga, the motorcycle he was on slipped, causing his mouth area to meet the ground.

Fortunately, the 21-year-old was immediately rushed to the hospital. When all was said and done, he lost three teeth and had to have a total of three stitches on his chin and on the inside of his lower lip.

The San Sebastian player said his face must have looked pretty bad then because his father didn’t want him to look at himself in the mirror. “Three days, ‘di ko tinitignan hitsura ko. Ayaw ng tatay ko kasi madidismaga siguro ako kung makita ko,” he recalled.

Still, after three days, Calisaan was feeling well enough to be released from the hospital. Moreover, the wounds he sustained would  heal sooner than later and would not force him to miss any time away from the court.

Thankful of how fortunate he was that one, he survived, and two, he didn’t break bones or tear muscles, the Stag said he asked his family to visit church right after he was released from the hospital. “Nagpapasalamat pa rin ako kay Lord na wala akong pilay. After kong lumabas ng hospital, dumiretso kami sa Sta. Rita Church para magpasalamat,” he said.

With the new NCAA season only a week away, Calisaan said doctors have already cleared him to play and the decision whether to use him or not  is now up to coach Egay Macaraya. Whatever happens, he assured everybody that he will be ready as he said, “Hindi ko na iniisip yun. Magtratrabaho lang talaga ako.”
