Codinera’s best advice to Chiefs: ‘Listen to Jiovani’
LONG DRIVE. Jiovani Jalalon is all set to lead Arellano's drive for glory.

Arellano University has been and still is touted to be the favorites to win it all in the upcoming NCAA 92 Season.

Much of that has to do with Jiovani Jalalon – entering his fourth year now as High Chief and without a doubt, the top collegiate guard in the country.

He may have better depth to go along with wiser players, but coach Jerry Codinera recognizes that the Chiefs still go as far as Jalalon takes them.

Many words have been said and written about the Cagayan de Oro native, but Codinera still seems to never run out of superlatives. Following a runner-up finish in their first-ever Filoil, the former said of the latter, “He is my extension sa floor. Nafi-feel talaga niya yung game and he’s like a coach on the floor.”

Always telling his wards that there’s no better way than following their leader, he continued, “Yun talaga ine-emphasize ko sa kanila, listen to Jiovani.”

Asked about his mentor’s unwavering faith in him, Jalalon said, “Siguro may tiwala lang talaga si coach sa akin. Pinapakita ko naman sa kanya talaga sa practice.”

The Gilas cadet was quick to clarify, however, that it will take a total team effort for Arellano to meet their expectations. As he put it, “Hindi lang naman ako pwedeng maglaro mag-isa kasi hindi naman ako si Superman. Sabi ko sa kanila, kailangan naitng magtulong-tulong.”

While he is the undoubted main man in Legarda, Jalalon shared he he left being team captain to teammate Allen Enriquez. “Yes, hindi muna ako mag-captain. Kasi kapag nag-captain ako, iisipin ko pa silang lahat,” he said.

That doesn’t mean, however, that the High Chief is shying away from the leadership role. “Sabi ko naman sa kanila, ‘Huwag niyo ako i-captain, pero iga-guide ko pa rin naman kayo.’”
