JRU stealth Bombers all set to take everybody by surprise

YOU BETTER GET READY FOR A BIG SURPRISE. Without any definitive scouting report on them, JRU is ready and raring to get the jump on their opponents.
HOW’D THEY DO LAST SEASON? 12-6, fourth place
YES, THEY’RE STILL HERE: Jordan dela Paz, Paolo Pontejos, Teytey Teodoro
WELCOME TO THE FAMILY: N/A
GOOD LUCK ON FUTURE ENDEAVORS: Dave Sanchez
No, Jose Rizal University didn’t change its monicker.
They’re still the Heavy Bombers, but how they are approaching the 92nd Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament has been nothing but stealthy.
Vergel Meneses’ boys didn’t show themselves in the 2016 Filoil Flying V Preseason – the one and only squad in the league who did so. The Fr. Martin’s Cup is the only preseason tournament they participated in, and even there, they only gave glimpses of what they are capable of.
While JRU is still widely regarded to be among the contenders, no one at all has any idea what to expect from JRU. And as it turns out, they like it that way as Teytey Teodoro expressed, “Oo, ganun talaga. Ayaw pa ipaalam ni coach yung gameplan namin this season.”
Proving his top gun’s claim, the seventh-year shot caller in Shaw Boulevard is yet to respond to ABS-CBN Spors’ queries about their expectations for the season.
Nonetheless, Teodoro had one promise for their supporters as well as their opponents. “Tingin ko, readyng-ready na kami,” he said.
His running mate Paolo Pontejos could only agree in saying, “Ready na talaga kami. Lalo na in terms of experience, lalamang kami kasi dalawa lang nawala sa amin.”
Indeed, the Bombers have one of the most, if not the most, intact units in the league – only losing backup pointman Dave Sanchez and backup forward Marco Balagtas.
The fourth-placers from last season will also be getting wiser versions of Teodoro and Pontejos, the *blank* Brothers (just wait for it), who could very well stake claim as the best backcourt in the league.
The Shaw Boulevard-based squad are then expecting bigger things from Cameroonian reinforcement Abdel Poutouochi who had a big debut a season ago only to be silent the rest of the way. He will be helped out in the frontcourt by a developing Mark Neil Cruz – now the only Mark Cruz in the league – as well as team captain Jordan dela Paz and senior forward Ervin Grospe.
As such, JRU isn’t shying away from saying that they will not be satisfied by just making the Final Four for the third year in a row. As Teodoro put it, “Sana talaga ma-meet namin ang expectations. Target talaga namin ni Pao, makapasok na ng championship.”
