"Nag-focus ako kung saan ako mahina, and mas-lalo ko pang inimprove kung ano yung meron ako." -- Jomari Sollano
Former Knights Kevin Racal and Mark Cruz will always be remembered when people talk about Letran’s title run during the 91st season of the NCAA.
K-Racs was definitely the main gun for the Knights during the finals, averaging 20 points per game, while Cruz, earned himself Finals MVP honors, averaging 17 markers in the three-game series.
During game three though, one Knight definitely stepped up to the plate and proved to be the x-factor for the Season 91 champions, and that was center Jomari Sollano.
After scoring nine and ten points in the first two games respectively, Sollano turned into a perimiter sniper in game three, dropping 19 markers on 75% shooting, which included the go-ahead basket with 32 seconds left in overtime.
Sollano’s breakout game may have come during game three of the finals, but the kid from Cebu’s contributions were felt for Letran, all season long.
Serving as the main center in an all-Filipino Letran lineup, the undersized Sollano held his own against the league’s best reinforcements, including the likes of San Beda’s Ola Adeogun, Perpetual’s Bright Akhuetie and Prince Eze, and even would-be MVP Allwell Oraeme of Mapua.
“Actually may experience na ako, galing akong Cebu, nakapag-laro na din ako dun, yung mga binabantayan ko dun, halos pareho lang, yung mga import, kaya mas may idea na ako kung paano sila bantayan.” Sollano told ABS-CBN Sports.
And while Sollano said that he’ll be getting some help, for Season 92, the big man will have to do even more with the departure of last year’s main offensive weapons in Racal and Cruz.
“Yung sa akin, nag-focus lang ako sa kung saan ako mas mahina and mas-lalo ko pang inimprove kung ano yung meron ako. Dun ako nag-focus.”
