WIND BENEATH THE WINGS. Allwell Oraeme continues to be the pillar that allows Mapua to stand.
While nobody knew what to expect from Jose Rizal University in the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament, everybody was well aware of what Mapua Institute of Technology was bringing to the table.
Reigning MVP Allwell Oraeme delivered just that while returning player Andoy Estrella provided the late-game heroics as the Cardinals prevailed over the Heavy Bombers, 74-71, on Saturday at the MOA Arena.
The Nigerian reinforcement towered above all and collected 24 points, 17 rebounds, and four blocks to show he was all ready for an encore to his breakout a season ago. Estrella then added 10 points and a couple of crucial blocks in the last two minutes.
From a three-point deficit early in the final frame, Mapua uncorked a 14-7 burst that placed them ahead, 73-69, with three minutes remaining. They were only able to add one more point from there, but their defense also only allowed two points with Estrella registering two blocks on Jordan dela Paz’ fastbreak layup and Teytey Teodoro’s last heave.
Still, it was JRU which imposed their will right from tip-off and built a lead of as high as 10 points before the Cardinals got into their groove. “I think its resilience. We stuck together and got the win,” team captain CJ Isit expressed following their tournament-opening triumph.
For the Bombers, it was Paolo Pontejos and Teodoro who showed the way with 16 and 13 points, respectively.
