Red Cubs destroy archrival Squires to begin eight-peat bid
ROUSING START. Seven-time champion San Beda had no problems reinforcing their dominance right from the start of the NCAA 92 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

In the past seven years, San Beda High School had no match in the NCAA Juniors Basketball Tournament.

And if the start of Season 92 is any indication, they will continue dominating until somebody stops them.

Opening their campaign for a historic eight-peat, the Red Cubs mangled archrival Colegio de San Juan de Letran by 33 points, 107-74, on Monday at the San Juan Arena.

Joshua Tagala led three other teammates in double-digits as the seven-time champions ran roughshod over their opponents with a 33-8 advantage in transition points. Much of that came off the 41 errors they forced and, in all, converted into 43 points.

The Squires were actually keeping close after one quarter, only down, 24-25, before San Beda finally imposed their will and clearly claimed the succeeding three quarters by a lopsided score of 82-50.

The Red Cubs’ Finals opponents last year, Arellano High School also got off to a good start with a 105-88 triumph over University of Perpetual Help.

Lars Sunga and Guillmer Dela Torre scored 18 and 16 points, respectively, for the Braves who are determined to build on their breakthrough a season ago.

In other results, Lyceum of the Philippines University blasted Emilio Aguinaldo College, 85-66; Malayan Institute of Technology downed Jose Rizal High School, 86-64; and College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills razed San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 75-60.
