FIRST. Mapua was the first team to register a double-digit margin of victory in the NCAA 92 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Exploiting their size advantage to the fullest, Allwell Oraeme and Mapua Institute of Technology find themselves atop the leaderboard in the 92nd Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
With a massive advantage in inside points and rebounds, the Cardinals manhandled College of St. Benilde for a 78-68 decision at the San Juan Arena, Tuesday.
As always, Oraeme was Mapua’s pillar on both ends and collected 17 points, 21 rebounds, and two blocks while the backcourt of CJ Isit and Andoy Estrella combined for 27 points, seven assists, and 11 rebounds.
The reigning MVP powered the Cardinals’ dominance in inside points, 40-14, and rebounds, 50-38, as they pulled off back-to-back wins to start the season. Talking about his best showing after two games as a coach, Atoy Co said, “I’m expecting this, na dapat 2-0 kami.”
He then continued, “’Di namin dapat pakawalan ‘to. Pambihirang nangyayari sa Mapua na 2-0.”
The contest was close at halftime with the Cardinals only on top by five until their shots finally fell into the net for a thunderous 19-8 charge that erected a 54-38 advantage near the end of the third quarter.
The Blazers would decrease their deficit to nine points more than a few times, but Oraeme and his teammates always had an answer to keep them at bay. Carlo Young scored 20 points in the losing effort that drops them to 0-2.
