So far, so good in San Beda High School’s title defense in the NCAA 92 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

Behind a 35-point third quarter, the Red Cubs notched back-to-back wins to begin the season, this time at the expense of Lyceum of the Philippines University, 97-88, on Thursday at the San Juan Arena.

Adi Velasquez and Evan Nelle poured in 17 and 16 points, respectively, and the seven-time champions got it going outside the paint where they outperformed their opponents, 45-32, to remain in first-place with a 2-0 record.

San Beda sprinted from the start with a 28-15 opening salvo before the Junior Pirates responded with a 33-point second quarter to actually take a three-point lead into the break.

Back out of the dugouts, however, the Cubs got into their groove and got back the momentum which they kept until the final buzzer. “We were expecting this kind of game because LPU is really a veteran team,” a proud coach JB Sison said in his post-game conference.

Matching the standing of the defending champions are Arellano High School and Malayan Institute of Technology who scored separate second straight wins of their own.

The Braves pounded on San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 86-66, on the back of a balanced attack. They counted six players who contributed at least seven points topped by Lars Sunga who posted a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Not to be outdone, the Red Robins blasted College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills, 94-78, with Romuel Junsay and Jasper Salenga merging for 47 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, and seven steals.

In other results, Colegio de San Juan de Letran rushed through Emilio Aguinaldo College, 74-67, all the way to win number one. Also barging into the win column is University of Perpetual Help who grounded Jose Rizal High School, 66-52.
