FULL SPEED AHEAD. Jiovani Jalalon and Arellano passed their second test of the season with flying colors.
Jiovani Jalalon and Arellano University are out in front of the pack in the 92nd Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament – and they had no trouble getting there.
Enforcing a defense that forced 37 errors quickly converted into 43 points, the Chiefs bulldozed their way through San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 99-81, on Friday at the San Juan Arena.
Jalalon once again flirted with a triple-double, totaling 31 points, 11 assists, and eight steals to once again lead him to a 2-0 standing. He also set the pace right from tip-off as the Chiefs raced to a quick 20-6 start.
The gap would remain in double-digits for majority of the matchup, but the Golden Stags still threatened at 69-75 in the middle of the final frame. Jalalon and newfound partner-in-crime Lervin Flores had more than enough gas left in the tank, however, and fueled Arellano to 24 more points until the final buzzer.
First-year forward Flores wowed for the second straight game with a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double to go along with two blocks while Dioncee Holts added 16 markers of his own. “Malaking bagay na marami na kaming reliable na malaki,” coach Jerry Codinera expressed.
On the other hand, the Stags were unable to sustain the momentum from their first win and dropped to 1-1. Ryan Costelo led them in the losing effort with 15 points.
