NOT ON OUR TIME. Bong Quinto and JP Calvo got together for the finishing touches in Letran's first winning streak of the season.
College of St. Benilde was oh so close to rallying for their very first win in the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Only, Bong Quinto and JP Calvo weren’t going to let it come at the expense of Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
Quinto’s pinpoint inbound that led to Calvo’s breakaway layup quelled the Blazers’ uprising and claimed for the Knights a 56-52 decision at the San Juan Arena, Friday.
On the back of a 10-1 run to start the second half, the defending champions turned a nine-point lead into a 39-21 advantage. The Blazers weren’t giving up that easy, however, and got going in the final frame to pull to within 50-54 with 34 ticks on the clock.
It was at that point that, coming off a timeout, Quinto found Calvo who had a step on his man. Receiving the perfect pass, Calvo then turned it into the basket that cemented Letran’s rise to 2-1.
Calvo and Quinto wound up with 11 points apiece while Jom Sollano poured in 16 of his own to help the Knights overcome off games from Rey Nambatac and Mcjour Luib. “It’s good to see na maraming ibang nag-step up,” coach Jeff Napa said.
In falling short of a comeback, CSB also fell into a 0-2 hole early in the season. Reinforcement Clement Leutcheu fronted their effort with a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double.
