NEWFOUND PARTNER-IN-CRIME. Jiovani Jalalon has found for himself an option in the paint in the form of Lervin Flores.
Jayson David had a clear lane to get San Sebastian College-Recoletos to within single-digits of Arellano University in the final frame of their matchup on Friday.
Or so the Golden Stag thought.
From out of nowhere, Lervin Flores leapt into the air and erased the attempt and with it, San Sebastian’s momentum.
Without a doubt, Jiovani Jalalon showed the Chiefs the way to victory, but the first-year forward was there with him all the way. “Blessing lang din na makalaro si Jio,” Flores said, bouncing back all the credit to their main man.
For his part, Jalalon said he and his other teammates are just making sure Flores gets something in return for all his hardwork. “Ang masasabi ko lang kay Lervin, sobrang sipag nyan,” he said.
Asked if he has a new favorite receiver for his passes with how his looks inside for the first-year forward were getting more frequent, “The Bus Driver” responded, “Oo, kasi siya talaga yung hinahanap naming big man ngayon, yung aktibo gumalaw.”
Indeed, through two games in his first season in the NCAA, Flores is averaging nine points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks all while holding down the fort for Arellano on both ends. Reacting to how his numbers have opened so many eyes this early in his break in the big-time, he modestly said, “Ginawa ko lang talaga yung trabaho ko. Aggressive lang talaga siguro.”
As it turns out, however, solid stats were the least of expectations for the athletic big man because he’s actually a rookie-veteran. He played for Fatima University in the NAASCU for a couple of years before transferring to Legarda where he is set to see action for two seasons.
Sharing the reason for his transfer, Flores said in all honesty, “Mas maganda kasi exposure dito sa NCAA. Tapos nagagawa ko yung gusto ko sa basketball.”
In his eyes, however, the rookie-veteran can only improve on his promising beginning. “Masaya ako sa performance ko, pero dadagdagan ko pa,” he expressed.
He then continued, “Aggressive lang lagi, pero humble lang muna. Nag-uumpisa pa lang ako e.”
