COMING THROUGH. Because Bright Akhuetie has dominated in the two games he has played in, Perpetual has now won back-to-back.
University of Perpetual Help is yet to be defeated in the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament – when Bright Akhuetie plays, that is.
For the second time in a row now, the Nigerian towered above all for a 20-point, 20-rebound double-double to lift the Altas over San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 76-61, on Thursday at the San Juan Arena.
After missing Perpetual’s tournament opener, Akhuetie has now had back-to-back dominant scoring and rebounding performances that have led to back-to-back wins.
Still, the Golden Stags were threatening at 54-60 early in the final frame before the dominant reinforcement had half of the points in a 16-7 rush the Altas used to wrap up the game.
“Buti nga, kahit masama ang laro namin, nanalo pa rin kami,” a satisfied coach Jimwell Gican said. Daryl Singontiko and GJ Ylagan added 12 and 11 points, respectively, to help the Las Pinas-based squad raise their record to 2-1.
Conversely, San Sebastian suffered a second straight setback to fall to 1-2. Showing the way for them, from out of nowhere, was diminutive Regile Ilagan who poured in 27 points built on six triples.
