MONSTER NUMBERS. It is no surprise that Mike Nzeusseu's third straight double-double coincides with LPU's third straight win.
With reigning Player of the Week Ian Alban going through a cooldown contest, Lyceum of the Philippines University was Harry Nzeusseu’s to steer all to himself.
And steer the Pirates into continuing their surge, he did.
The Cameroonian claimed a third consecutive double-double while also providing the clutch basket and board that cemented the Pirates’ third win in a row, this time at the expense of San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 83-79, on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
Nzeusseu was a force down low and ended up with 26 points, 24 rebounds, and two blocks while Wilson Baltazar and Shaq Alanes turned in their best games of the season with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Still, LPU’s once eight-point lead in the middle of the final frame was shaved to only 81-79 with 44 ticks on the clock. It was at that point that their overwhelming reinforcement powered his way inside for a big basket.
In the ensuing possession, the Pirates defended well before surrendering a contested shot for Ryan Costelo which only clanged off he rim. Again, it was Nzeusseu who took care of the rebound.
The double-double machine was sent to the line where he muffed on both charities, but time expired even before the Golden Stags were able to get off an attempt.
Alban was limited to only two points and turned the ball over four times and yet, coach Topex Robinson is enjoying the best winning streak of his LPU career which now stands at three.
Now with an overall record of 3-3, the Pirates are the hottest team in the league after still unbeaten San Beda College. “There’s so much potential in this team and as long as we play our cards right, we will hopefully keep this up,” Robinson said.
On the other hand, San Sebastian dropped their fifth game in a row despite the best efforts of Costelo and Jerick Fabian who scored 23 and 19 points, respectively.
