For a while on Thursday at the San Juan Arena, it seemed like lady luck was frowning upon San Beda High School.

Taking matters into his own hands, Prince Etrata changed all of that with a booming triple.

Etrata bombed down his first and only triple over the raised hands of Romuel Junsay to rescue the Red Cubs from Malayan High School, 86-84, and bring them onto shared possession of first-place in the NCAA 92 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

The seven-time titlists were chasing down a one-point deficit inside the last two minutes. This, after being in the penalty forced them to give up four free throws which the Red Robins were only more than happy to make.

San Beda then compounded their disadvantage with back-to-back turnovers in the last sixty seconds. However, their defense kept the tally at only 83-84 and kept them in the game.

Off a timeout, the Cubs then found Etrata at the corner with a good shot. With no rhythm due to foul trouble, he still rose and launched the booming triple that would prove to be the difference as Bryan Samudio dribbled off his foot Malayan’s last chance.

As it turns out, lady luck was still kind for the defending champions as the play wasn’t even designed for Etrata. “Option din lang siya. Kung sinuman may magandang tira, sa kanya yung bola,” coach JB Sison shared.

Etrata finished with just five points, including a 1/4 clip from deep, but it was undoubtedly him that made sure San Beda stayed spotless at 7-0. Mark Lagumen topped the scoring column for them with 21 points.

For Malayan, it was Romuel Junsay who waxed hot with 27 markers. They let this one slip away, however, and now stand at 5-2.

In the day’s other game, Colegio de San Juan de Letran got back to winning at the expense of Jose Rizal High School, 74-63.
