BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR. Jiovani Jalalon came out on top of his mini-duel with Gerald Castor.
Just like he has throughout the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament, Jiovani Jalalon looked like he was just coasting against still winless College of St. Benilde.
That was until Blazers pointman Gerald Castor took it upon himself to get up close and personal with “The Bus Driver” on Friday.
With Arellano University nursing a double-digit lead in the third quarter, the two got testy with one another from end-to-end. They were going at it so close to one another so much so that game officials had to remind them not to get overboard more than a few times.
Trailing from tip-off, CSB were still down, 34-44, early in the third before Castor’s bodying up caused Jalalon to take the wheel. Swishing seven points and delivering one assist, he was at the forefront of the 14-2 burst that build the biggest lead of the game, 58-36, for the Chiefs.
Asked about their interactions then, “The Bus Driver” told ABS-CBN Sports, “Naano lang ako sa kanya kasi nasa isip ko, ginagawa niya akong rookie. Pero wala lang naman sa akin yun, binabalikan ko lang din siya.”
He then continued, “Pero ako, alam mo naman, nag-eenjoy lang ako. Kaya tinigilan ko na rin kasi alam kong pangit.”
Only with two points, three assists, three rebounds, and one steal after the first half, Jalalon wound up with 16 points, six assists, seven rebounds, and four steals. The performance was more like the Jalalon we all know and love rather than the Jalalon of recent who has failed to reach the high standards he set for himself.
Far from being the MVP frontrunner many thought him to be in the preseason, the Arellano court general has taken a backseat to names such as Rey Nambatac, Davon Potts, and Donald Tankoua. He has no problem with it whatsoever as he said, “Mas masaya nga ako pag si Rey nag-MVP kasi kababayan ko. Sa akin, ‘di ko naman iniisip yung MVP.”
He then continued, “Gusto ko yung team namin, pumasok ng Finals. Yun naman yung target, ‘di pangsarili ko lang.”
