BETTER AND BETTER. On the day Jiovani Jalalon turned 23, Arellano extended their win run to three.
It was “The Bus Driver’s” birthday on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena, but he was still very much on duty for Arelano University.
“The Conductor” and Dioncee Holts were right there with him and the three of them fueled the Chiefs to a third win in a row in the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament, this time at the expense of Lyceum of the Philippines University, 81-76.
Birthday boy Jiovani Jalalon and running mate Kent Salado connived for 30 points, eight assists, and 11 rebounds while Holts finally had his breakout in the season with a 20-point, 15-rebound double-double.
Still, LPU surged in the third quarter to tie the tally at 54 until Salado orchestrated an 18-6 spurt that re-established a 72-60 lead for the Chiefs in the middle of the final frame.
The Pirates again threatened at 76-79 with 20 seconds to go before Reymar Caduyac’s possible game-tying triple went wide left. Jalalon then swished a couple of charities to seal the deal in Arellano’s climb onto a share of second with a 6-2 record.
Now they have steadied themselves back into the playoff mix, the Chiefs are only looking ahead. “We just continue yung mga positive things na nangyayari sa amin. Hopefully, it will trigger more wins pa.”
For LPU, it was Harry Nzeusseu who did the heavy lifting with 24 points and 17 rebounds.
