Unlike the challengers to their throne, seven-time champion San Beda High School made sure to come out at the winning end of the first round of the NCAA 92 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

Starting strong and then finishing strong, the Red Cubs took care of business against Jose Rizal High School, 79-69, and reclaimed a place atop the leaderboard on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.

Sam Abu Hijleh held down the fort early as San Beda powered through for a 24-14 opening salvo. Following a 30-point third quarter, however, the Light Bombers clawed back into the game and only faced a one-point deficit.

The defending champions stiffened up their defense and only allowed seven points in the final frame, however, as Robi Nayve took charge at the other end. He wound up with 15 points.

Abu Hijleh added a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double and the Cubs returned to winning form now at 8-1. They stand on even ground with Arellano High School who was at the receiving end of a shocking upset by College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills a day earlier.

Meanwholw, Malayan High School solidified their spot at third-place after blitzing Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 95-74.

Pointman Romuel Junsay did much of the heavy lifting with 25 points while four other teammates also ended up in double-digits. This more than made up for reigning MVP Mike Enriquez’ scoreless season debut.

The Red Robins stand at 7-2 while the Squres fall to 4-5.
