ALL GOOD. Jiovani Jalalon powered through a bad fall just like Arellano powered through San Sebastian.
They ran through rough patches all while San Sebastian College-Recoletos was giving them a good chase, but the Arellano University bus is still speeding forward in the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament
And yet again, it was all because of the man behind the steering wheel and his capable crew.
Jiovani Jalalon poured in a season-high 33 points while Kent Salado punched in the big baskets as the Chiefs withstood the Golden Stags’ challenge for a hard-fought 89-84 win on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
Struggling through the first round, San Sebastian looked like a completely different team and hung with the Chiefs for majority of the matchup. Ryan Costelo’s trey even tied the tally at 77 inside the last three minutes.
It was at that point, however, that Salado scored four straight points and Jalalon added two more to re-establish an 83-77 advantage in Arellano’s favor. Still, the Stags weren’t quitting and pulled to within two before Dioncee Holts’ and Salado’s 5-0 push put the game away for good.
The hard-fought win was the Chiefs’ fifth in a row and eighth out of 10 overall. Finally looking like championship contenders once more, coach Jerry Codinera expressed, “Buti na-pick up na laro namin.”
Salado was big in the clutch and wound up with 11 points, but it was Jalalon’s game-long brilliance that showed the way for Arellano. “The Bus Driver” also contributed 10 assists and was able to return to action after a bad fall in the third quarter.
Costelo was the high man for San Sebastian with 24 points. However, their failed upset bid became their ninth consecutive defeat following a tournament-opening triumph.
