’Yung willingness nila to sacrifice, ‘yung willing sila to share the ball nandoon eh. 'Yun ang hindi ko makita noong first round --- JRU coach Vergel Meneses
Jose Rizal University finally found what was missing in their team in the first round.
“Sa akin tingin ko ‘yung desire eh. ‘Yung desire nila to win (ang nawala),” said Heavy Bombers coach Vergel Meneses.
The Mandaluyong-based squad for the first time in NCAA Season 92 won two straight games including a 65-60 victory over the Mapua Cardinals Thursday at The Arena in San Juan.
Meneses said that he saw in the eyes of his wards the fire that was missing in the first round.
“’Yung willingness nila to sacrifice, ‘yung willing sila to share the ball nandoon eh,” the mentor said. “’Yun ang hindi ko makita noong first round. Parang nandoon, wala, nandoon, wala.”
JRU sealed the first round with only four wins as opposed to their five losses.
“Ayoko ng pag-usapan ang first round kasi kumbaga nightmare yun eh. Hindi ko alam kung bakit nagkaganoon. Kaming mga coaches na-figure out namin kung bakit, yung desire kasi wala eh,” said Meneses.
But their win against the erstwhile undefeated defending champion San Beda Red Lions, 79-73, to close the first phase of the eliminations rekindled the spirit to win.
They rode the crest of their huge morale-boosting conquest to take down the Cardinals.
He hopes that it will be a start of something big for the Bombers. Their next mission now is to move up the ladder to get on the top four.
“Sinabi ko sa kanila na kapag hindi tayo nanalo sa mga tumalo sa atin sa first round next year na ang bawi natin, napakatagal. Ngayon bawian na natin sila,” he said.
