Streaking Jose Rizal University continued with its giant-killing ways as the Heavy Bombers took down the slumping defending champion Letran Knights, 75-68, in overtime on Tuesday for their third straight win in the 92nd NCAA seniors basketball competition at The Arena in San Juan.
Teytey Teodoro carried the Heavy Bombers in the extra five minutes scoring half of the team's 16 points in the period. JRU improved its record to 6-5 at solo fifth spot.
Teodoro finished with 23 points in a 9-of-20 scoring clip including four treys while backcourt partner Paolo Pontejos nailed 16 markers, half of it coming off his perfect trips at the foul line, for the Kalentong-based squad, which avenged its 62-67 loss to the Intramuros-based squad in the first round.
Ervin Grospe added 10 points while Cameroonian Abdoulad Poutouochi scored eight points including four in overtime in a back-to-back basket that sparked JRU’s closing 15-4 rally. Poutouchi grabbed 15 boards with three assists, a steal and a block.
Bombers head coach Vergel Meneses admitted that his team played sloppy basketball during the latter part of regulation, never taking advantage of Letran’s early foul trouble by pounding the ball underneath. But the mentor also gave credit to his boys in responding to his challenge during overtime.
“I challenged them, sinasabihan ko ng 'di maganda but they proved me wrong, ‘yun lang ‘yun,” he said. “'Yun ang gusto kong mangyari na mahirap na ako ang tama. They proved me wrong.”
“Before noong overtime na-bad decision ako eh. Nag-error ako kaya noong overtime na-challenge ako ni coach Vergel na dapat tinira ko yun. Kaya noong nag-start na ang overtime ako na ang tumira,” said Teodoro, who failed to take a shot in JRU’s last possession before the regulation clock expired.
After Poutouochi knotted the score in overtime at 64, Teodoro swished a jumper after a nasty ankle breaker on Knights star guard Rey Nambatac. The 5-foot-10 Teodoro did it again to Nambatac with 1:48 remaining in OT before letting fly a triple before closing the run with a layup in the last 10.5 ticks for the final count.
Letran absorbed its fourth straight defeat to tie Lyceum of the Philippines University at 5-6 slate.
Nambatac scored 19 points, John Calvo had 18 while John Quinto registered 14 points with nine boards before fouling out under three minutes in the extension.
