GIANT-SLAYERS. San Sebastian's last three wins have come against top-tier teams Perpetual, San Beda, and Mapua.
San Sebastian College-Recoletos’ streak of stunners in the second round of the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament is far from over.
The giant-slaying Golden Stags claimed their third victim in a row on Friday at the San Juan Arena as they battled back from as much as 17 to rally by Mapua Insitute of Technology, 69-67.
Reigning MVP Allwell Oraeme and the Cardinals imposed their will right from tip-off with a 25-8 first quarter. San Sebastian, however, came alive in the middle quarters and doubled their opponents’ output, 42-21, to mount a four-point lead entering the final frame.
“They didn’t give up and yung heart to win, nakikita na natin,” an unusually bright coach Egay Macaraya expressed in his post-game conference.
Still, Mapua was able to regain control and re-establish a 64-59 advantage with 2:21 remaining until Allyn Bulanadi’s fastbreak layup punctuated a 9-0 charge that pushed the Stags in front, 68-64.
Darrel Menina’s trey pulled the Cardinals to within one, but Ryan Costelo’s split coupled with Oraeme’s turnover sealed the deal in San Sebastian’s third consecutive victory and fourth overall out of 13. “Natuto na kami manalo,” Macaraya said.
Costelo wound up with 20 points while Michael Calisaan contributed a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double for the vastly-improved Stags who have now felled University of Perpetual Help, San Beda College, and Mapua in their last three games.
Oraeme paced the Cardinals with 16 points and 21 rebounds which proved insufficient in preventing their slip to 7-5.
