GAINING ALTITUDE. Teytey Teodoro and JRU keep climbing the leaderboard in the NCAA 92 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Without a doubt, Jose Rizal University has left their struggles in the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament far in the rearview mirror.
The Heavy Bombers gained more altitude for their playoff push after powering through Lyceum of the Philippines University, 68-58, on Friday at the San Juan Arena.
It was the Pirates who actually took control of a close contest and took a four-point advantage at the midway mark of the third before JRU responded with 12 unanswered points to go ahead, 46-38.
LPU kept coming, however, and closed to within four points with 63 seconds to go before Abdel Poutouochi scored on a fallaway short stab over the outstretched arms of Harry Nzeusseu for a 64-58 lead in the Bombers’ favor.
The JRU defense stood strong the rest of the way and did not allow any more makes as Teytey Teodoro padded onto their lead with a high-arching triple from the top of the key that touched nothing but net.
Teodoro fired a total of 22 points while Poutouochi and Ervin Grospe chipped in 14 and 15 points, respectively.
The usual suspects starred, but coach Vergel Meneses credited his entire team for their fourth win in a row following a 3-5 start. “Pagdating ng second round, iba na talaga ang attitude ng buong team,” he expressed.
For the Pirates, it was rookie Ian Alban who topped the scoring with 27 markers to his name. He was unable to find any help, however, as they fell to 5-7.
