There were many power performances from the MVP contenders in the NCAA 92 Juniors Basketball Tournament, but Sam Abu Hijleh’s stood out as the most powerful of them all.
Pounding in 27 points in sure 71 percent shooting to go along with 13 rebounds, he powered still league-leading San Beda High School to a 14-point victory versus Lyceum of the Philippines University.
What made his feat even more impressive is that he did most of it up against the six-foot-seven tower of the Junior Pirates Erlan Umpad. Nothing but appreciative of the reliability of his ward, coach JB Sison said, “He carried us through.”
Abu Hijleh’s double-double – already a norm through the tournament – was more than enough for him to stave off Arellano High School rival Guilmer dela Torre and be recognized as the NCAA Juniors Player of the Week for August 21 to 27
