Sidney Onwubere carried the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals past Jose Rizal University with 26 points.
Emilio Aguinaldo College halted streaking Jose Rizal University via a 63-60 escape act on Tuesday with a result that was put under protest by the Heavy Bombers in the 92nd NCAA seniors basketball competition at The Arena in San Juan.
The Generals got the victory that ended their three-game skid when referees waived off a potential game-tying three free throws by JRU point guard Teytey Teodoro at the final buzzer.
Teodoro, who was having a hard time eluding the choking defense of EAC the whole game, was fouled while attempting a triple by Remy Morada just as the buzzer sounded. The officials decided that the foul was whistled after the time expired, denying Teodoro the free throws.
JRU team captain Jordan Dela Paz signed the official stats sheet putting the game under protest.
EAC improved to 4-9 win-loss slate.
Sidney Onwubere top scored for the Generals with 26 points including 12 in the last quarter and a rebound short of a double-double while Hamadou Laminou finished with 19 points and 10 boards.
“We’re thankful na yung mga malalakas naming kalaban noong una ay nagbigay sa amin ng experience para mas maging compose ang team at kayanin na namin,” said EAC coach Ariel Sison. “At least yung character namin nandyan na at nagbu-build na ng maayos.”
The Generals saw their 36-19 lead at the start of the third quarter erased by the Bombers as Abdoulad Poutouochi tied the game at 41 with under a minute left.
It was a see-saw battle from there before Laminou scored on a smooth finger roll from a Morada dish with 38.1 second to go for a 62-60 lead. AbdulRazak AbdulWahab on the other end missed his two charities before Morada split his attempt on EAC’s possession with 16.6 ticks to go.
Mark Dela Virgen had 12 points while Teodoro and Mark Cruz had eight markers each for the 7-6 Bombers, who had its four-game winning streak snapped.
