Jose Rizal University team captain Jordan Dela Paz signs the official score book to put the Heavy Bombers' loss against Emilio Aguinaldo College under protest.
The Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers put its, 60-63, loss to Emilio Aguinaldo College under protest Tuesday in the 92nd NCAA seniors basketball competition at The Arena in San Juan.
But Heavy Bombers coach Vergel Meneses would rather not pursue the protest and just gave credit to the Generals who snapped their four-game winning streak.
“Pag-uusapan pa sa school ‘yun kung itutuloy (ang protesta),” said Meneses.
JRU has 24 hours to file a formal protest.
“Pero kung ako ang tatanungin huwag na lang,” he added. “Kasi because of that mananalo ka ng dahil doon o uulitin ang game. Let’s give credit doon sa EAC kasi they played really well.”
The referees waived off a potential game-tying three freethrows by JRU point guard Teytey Teodoro at the final buzzer.
Teodoro, who was having a hard time eluding the choking defense of EAC the whole game, was fouled while attempting a triple by Remy Morada just as the buzzer sounded. The officials decided that the foul was whistled after the time expired, denying Teodoro the freethrows.
JRU team captain Jordan Dela Paz signed the official stats sheet putting the game under protest.
For his part, Meneses said that there was a contact on that last play.
“Sa paniniwala ko you have to see the contact at release kasi usually ang pagtawag naman late ‘yan e di ba?” he said. “Noong tiningnan namin parang may 0.1 pero ganoon pero ‘yun ang call nila, wala tayong magagawa.”
Outside of that controversial last play, Meneses said that his team had a subpar outing, far from the Heavy Bombers that ravaged its way through powerhouse teams San Beda, Mapua, defending champion Letran and Lyceum of the Philippines University.
“My starters sina Teytey Teodoro, Paolo Pontejos and Abdoulad Poutouochi bad start,” he said. “They think na kayang-kaya nila ang EAC eh sinabi ko na sa kanila na matatalo lang ang EAC sa last minute of the game.”
The loss pulled the Bombers out of the top four with 7-6 win-loss card behind Mapua (7-5).
“Yun ang sinasabi ko sa kanila na we can’t afford to lose. Heto na may chance na tayo, heto na ang mga kalaban natin. Ibig kong sabihin kung nanalo kami paakyat kami eh, mase-separate na kami sa mga nasa baba,” Menses said. “Eh siguro baka kailangang gisingin ulit.”
