Rookie RK Ilagan of San Sebastian College nailed seven triples to lead the Stags past Lyceum of the Philippines University.
RK Ilagan waxed-hot from the outside, nailing seven treys to lead the San Sebastian College to its fourth straight win at the expense of a reeling Lyceum of the Philippines side, 77-69, Tuesday in the 92nd NCAA seniors basketball competition at The Arena in San Juan.
Ilagan dropped 25 points on an 8-of-17 shooting clip, grabbed four rebounds with an assist for the Stags, who improved their record to 5-9 win-loss record.
The 19-year-old rookie drilled all of his three pointers in the second half where he scored all but two of his total output including the back-breaking triple with just 1:46 in the game for a 73-64 lead to answer the trey connected Wilson Baltazar with under two minutes remaining in the fourth that cut SSC-R’s lead to only six.
“I guess everybody wants to win and everybody stepped up again. And also everybody played defense,” said Stags coach Egay Macaraya, whose squad blasted a 27-17 scoring in the third for a 55-47 lead heading into the payoff period.
“Hindi naman natin maialis kay RK yung lahat ng tira sa three-points, inborn na yata yan sa batang ito eh,” said Macaraya of his prized freshman. “But the key to our victory is our defense.”
Ilagan’s output is just two points shy of matching his career-high of 27 points when the Stags, bankrolled by team manager Joseph Dehenco, defeated Perpetual Help to spark their winning run.
Jerick Fabian added 12 points, Alvin Capobres had 10 points and seven rebounds while Allyn Bulanadi, who scored the game-winner in SSC-R’s upset over San Beda two game ago. Point guard Ryan Costelo scored only two points but dished out 10 assists for the Recto-based squad, that forced the Pirates to commit 23 turnovers they converted to 21 points.
LPU slid to its third straight defeat for a 5-8 slate.
Mike Nzeusseu posted a double-double of 24 points and 19 rebounds while Reymar Caduyac and Aldrin Serafico scored eight points each for the Pirates.
