Letran ends drought, demolishes listless CSB
Jom Sollano of Letran fires a floater over the outstretched hands of Christian Fajarito of College of St. Benilde.

Defending champion Colegio de San Juan de Letran found the fire that was missing in their string of misfortunes.

The Knights ended a five-game slump by burying the listless College of St. Benilde to this season’s lowest total output with a 57-40 victory Tuesday in the 92nd NCAA seniors basketball competition at The Arena in San Juan.

Rey Nambatac scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds while John Calvo posted seven markers for the Knights, which improved to 6-7 win-loss slate for sixth place despite playing without suspended players Jerrick Balanza, Chris Dela Pena and Marvin Sario. The three along with San Beda’s Antonio Bonsubre were meted with a one-game ban each after their involvement in a melee last Friday in the Red Lions’ 83-71 win.

Letran turned their 13-14 deficit at the end of the opening period into a rout as the Knights limited the Blazers to just five points in the second quarter. The Intramuros-based squad blew the game wide-open in the second half to finish off CSB.

“Siyempre malaking factor (na nanalo na kami) dahil ikaw ba namang magsunud-sunod na puro talo eh. At least hopefully ito ang mabu-boost ng morale sa mga bata kasi malakas ang kalaban namin sa Friday,” said Letran coach Jeff Napa, whose squad will face streaking San Sebastian College next.

The Taft-based squad’s drought continued as the Blazers dropped its 13th straight game in as many outings and a total of 15 since last season for the team’s worst start since joining the NCAA back in 1998.

Christian Fajarito finished with 11 points and nine rebounds while JJ Domingo had eight for CSB, which had 19 turnovers and a hellish 16-of-67 field goal shooting overall.

The Blazers also lost Emman San Juan to a right foot injury with 1:37 left in the third.
