Letran puts a stop to San Sebastian stampede
NOT GOING DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT. Letran is beginning to gain momentum for a much-needed playoff push.

There is no doubt that Colegio de San Juan de Letran will not let go of their title just like that in the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

That was no more evident than on Friday at the San Juan Arena when they returned to form and sent San Sebastian College-Recoletos crashing back to earth after a 73-61 throttling.

Rey Nambatac and JP Calvo scattered 16 points apiece and Letran avoided being the latest victim of the giant-slaying Golden Stags who have felled Perpetual, San Beda, Mapua, and LPU through their last four outings.

Following a tight first 10 minutes, the second quarter was where the Knights took control and established the comfortable margin they would nurse until the final buzzer.

San Sebastian gave the game some color inside the last three minutes and pulled to within 59-65 before Jerick Balanza and Bong Quinto got together for all but two points in an 8-2 run that finished the job for Letran.
Felix Apreku contributed nine points and 12 rebounds for the Knights who stayed sixth with a 7-7.

Still, after a five-game losing streak placed them out of the playoff picture, the defending champions are starting to make their presence felt once more with back-to-back wins. “Hopefully, naalala nila kung sino ang Letran sa NCAA,” coach Jeff Napa expressed, referring to his wards who are seemingly starting to wake up.

However, Letran knows they still have lots of work to do just to catch up with 8-5 and fourth-running Mapua. “Hindi ko muna iniintindi yung mga nasa itaas namin. Ang iniisip ko muna, yung sarili namin,” Napa said.

On the other hand, the Stags saw their win run come to an end despite the best efforts of Michael Calisaan who turned in his best game of the season with 24 points and nine rebounds. They fell to ninth-place at 5-10.
