NO QUIT. Bright Akhuetie and Perpetual had all the answers for JRU and their "Captain Clutch" Teytey Teodoro.
Known as the premiere defensive outfit in the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament, University of Perpetual Help showcased that they could come out on top in shootouts as well.
Daryl Singontiko and AJ Coronel matched “Captain Clutch” Teytey Teodoro shot-for-shot before Bright Akhuetie finally took over and willed the Altas to a 89-80 triumph over Jose Rizal University in double-overtime on Friday at the San Juan Arena.
The Nigerian powerhouse pounded in 11 of his 28 points in the two extra periods, six of which came via backbreaking putbacks. He also collected 18 rebounds, eight of which came at the offensive end, to carry Perpetual onto a share of second now at 11-4.
“Gusto ko purihin ang mga playes, lalo na si Bright. They did their job and they didn’t give up,” coach Jimwell Gican said of his tireless workhorse.
The Heavy Bombers were actually well on their way to a win, leading by seven inside the last three minutes before GJ Ylagan’s cold-blooded triple punctuated a 7-0 run by the Altas that tied the tally and forced overtime.
There, Teodoro again proved his clutch credentials and gave JRU a two-point advantage with 16 seconds remaining only to see Akhuetie rebound a teammate’s miss and send it back through the net.
Then in the second overtime, “Mr. Brightside” had all but three points in an 11-0 rush that put Perpetual on top, 85-78. JRU would not be able to decrease their deficit the rest of the way.
Gab Dagangon and Singontiko contributed 15 and 13 points, respectively, for Perpetual who stand alongside San Beda College at second-place. Both teams are ensured of at least a playoff for a Final Four berth while league-leading Arellano University are already ensured of entering the next round.
Teodoro paced the Bombers with 23 points which proved far from enough from preventing their drop to 9-7 – behind 9-5 and fourth-running Mapua Institute of Technology and just a hair ahead of 8-7 and sixth-running Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
