GOING TO WORK. Malayan didn't let their golden opportunity for a twice-to-beat advantage slip away.
SAN BEDA 17-1
SAN SEBASTIAN 2-15
Malayan Institute of Technology wanted no more complications in their playoff push in the NCAA 92 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
The Red Robins needed one half to get going, but once they did, they weren’t going to be stopped.
Amping up the defensive pressure in the second half, the Red Robins dragged down College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills before flying all the way up to a 75-59 decision on Monday at the San Juan Arena.
Trailing by six at halftime, Malayan suffocated their opponents to only six points while pouring in 24 points of their own in the third. Already ahead by 12 entering the final frame, they again outscored their opponents by four points.
In all, the Robins limited the Junior Blazers to 23 points in the second half. At the other end, they scored 24 points in the third quarter alone.
Brian Lacap showed Malayan the way to their 14th win in 17 games with 24 points off the bench. Jasper Salenga also contributed 15 points and seven rebounds.
Still with one assignment left on their schedule, the Robins are already assured of the second-seed. Coach Randy Alcantara won’t take it easy just yet, however, and said, “We’re not taking EAC lightly.”
For CSB-LSGH, Troy Mallillin led the losing effort with 16 points and nine rebounds. At 13-5, they are entangled with Arellano High School for third-place.
The Junior Blazers and the Braves will dispute the third-seed next week.
