THE REPLACEMENTS. EAC made sure CSB were taking their place as the team with most losses in a single season.
Without a doubt, Emilio Aguinaldo College has followed the ray of light all the way of light all the way out of the tunnel in the 92nd Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The same cannot be said for College of St. Benilde.
The much-improved Generals overcame the absence of team captain Francis Munsayac and paint presence Sidney Onwubere to hack out a 65-62 triumph over the Blazers on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
It was CSB’s 17th loss in a row since the start of the season – giving them the league record for most losses in a single season.
Interestingly, the previous record belonged to last year’s Generals who finished the tournament with only two wins to show to go along with 16 losses. “Na-pressure kami siguro nab aka kami pa ang unang magbigay ng panalo sa Benilde. Hindi kami pwedeng matalo sa Benilde,” coach Ariel Sison expressed post-game.
Still, exiting the tunnel was far from easy as EAC saw their once seven-point lead inside the last three minutes dwindle to 63-62 with 26.6 seconds to go.
Fortunately for Sison, Jorem Morada proved steady when he was sent to the stripe and made good on both free throws. Chasing down a 62-65 deficit, Carlo Young’s final attempt only grazed the bottom of the net as time expired.
Morada wound up with 18 points while Hamadou Laminou chipped in 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists to make up for the void left behind by Munsayac who was dealing with back spasms and Onwubere who was serving a one-game suspension.
Wthout Onwubere, the Generals were dominated on the boards, 29-40. “Halos kinain kami sa rebounds. Buti na lang nandyan si (Jeric) Diego and (Jervin) Guzman para mag-step up,” he said.
Indeed, seldom-used Diego and Guzman combined for 18 points and 10 rebounds to help their team improve to 6-11.
CSB will go down in the record books as the team with most losses in a single season, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Young topped the scoring column for them with 14 points.
The Blazers get one last chance to avoid becoming the first-ever squad to go winless in a season on Friday against Lyceum of the Philippines University.
