OOPS, I DID IT AGAIN. San Beda is now 2-0 against Arellano in the season.

The elimination round in the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament isn’t over yet – and it’s all because San Beda College did what they needed to do.

Javee Mocon pounded in a 19-point, 15-rebound double-double, Davon Potts proved his cutch credentials anew, and the Red Lions outclassed erstwhile league-leader Arellano University, 91-81, on Friday at the San Juan Arena.

Not only did their latest win take care of a season sweep of the Chiefs, it also set up another matchup between the two teams to determine the top-seed.

Both San Beda and Arellano are already assured of a twice-to-beat advantage, but the former has added motivation in the fact that they have had the top-seed for all of the last 10 years. As such, when asked about their mindset for the rematch on Tuesday, coach Jamike Jarin expressed, “We’ll play our hearts out every game. We don’t want to disrespect the game.”

The Lions led for majority of this matchup and were still ahead by 16, 73-57, late in the third before the Chiefs started an uprising and battled their way back to as near as five points with five minutes remaining. “(Arellano) is just too good to catch up, but we listened to each other. It’s constant communication,” Jarin said.

Indeed, Mocon and Potts had the answer for San Beda and connived for back-to-back hits to front the 10-5 finishing kick that cemented their 14th win in 18 games. Potts wound up with 18 points while AC Soberano added 15 of his own.

Six Lions contributed at least seven points in the scoring column and they coupled that balanced effort with tremendous defense on Jiovani Jalalon. The MVP frontrunner still had 14 points, eight assists, and eight rebounds, but muffed on all but five of his 23 attempts.

Kent Salado and Lervin Flores had 13 points apiece to backup Jalalon which proved far from enough to prevent Arellano’s fall to 14-4.
