GOT YOUR NUMBER. CSB-LSGH is now a perfect 3-0 against Arellano.
Arellano High School seemed unbeatable in the NCAA 92 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
Until College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills beat them
And on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena, the same Junior Blazers re-asserted their mastery over the Braves with a well-earned 79-76 decision in the playoff for the third-seed.
The win not only kept CSB-LSGH a perfect 3-0 against Arellano, it also matched their best elimination round finish in school history. As the third-seed, they take on second-seed and twice-to-beat Malayan High School of Science on Friday.
Unique Naboa scattered 21 points, including the go-ahead basket, to go along with eight assists, six rebounds, and three steals to make sure the Junior Blazers dealt the Braves their fifth consecutive defeat.
It almost wasn’t so as Jayson Danas’ jumper granted Arellano a two-point lead with 1:14 to go. It was at that point, however, that Naboa provided the counterpunch for the Junior Blazers with a booming trey.
Following a defensive stop, Harry Espinosa then leaked out for an easy layup and a 77-74 advantage for CSB-LSGH. Guilmer Dela Torre fished a foul and made both free throws to again pull the Braves within one.
The Junior Blazer defense stood strong from that point and did not allow any more makes as Troy Mallillin and Joel Cagulangan’s split from the stripe sealed the deal. “Pagod na kami, pero puso na lang inisip namin,” Troy Mallillin expressed.
MVP frontrunner Mallillin posted a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double to help CSB-LSGH gain much-needed momentum as they begin battle against the Red Robins who are 2-0 against them.
Dela Torre paced the Braves with 20 points while Carlo Abadeza provided backup with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. Once the league-leaders, their fifth loss in a row sends them to the fourth-seed and a matchup with surging San Beda High School.
