“Makikibalita na lang ako. Mauuna ata game nila, kaya mapapanood ko pa sila sa TV!”
Perpetual Altas fans will remember the pain when the team did not make the Final Four in NCAA Season 91—the strong team seemed like they had the slot in the bag until they lost three straight games. In the dying minutes of their last loss that closed the door on their season, star player Scottie Thompson bowed his head under a towel and cried.
Fast-forward to NCAA Season 92, and the Perpetual Altas have made it to the Final Four. Thompson, now a rookie fan favorite with the Barangay Ginebra in the PBA, dropped by the Perpetual Altas’ pep rally to cheer on his friends and former teammates.
“Sobrang saya at sobrang excited ko para sa team,” Thompson says. “Alam na alam kong kayang-kaya nila.”
The Altas will be facing the top-seeded San Beda Red Lions in the semifinals this Friday—an uphill battle, considering the Red Lions hold the twice-to-beat advantage. “Every time na mag-Final Four, San Beda ‘yung natatapat sa amin,” the point guard recalls. “So far, team defense ‘yung nag-improve sa Altas. Defense first sila kaya sila umabot sa ganitong level. Kaya rin this time, feel ko kaya nilang umabot finals.”
Gab Dagangon, one of the Altas’ veteran players, has been friends with Thompson since attending high school in Mindanao. Dagangon recorded a message for his pare and shared it on the ABS-CBN Sports Instagram: “Kahit wala ka na dito…ipagpapatuloy naming ‘yung sinimulan mo. Maraming salamat sa lahat ng ginawa mo para sa Altas.”
Thompson was touched. “Oo tinag ako ni Jio [Jalalon] kaya nakita ko,” he shares. “Sobrang nakaka-overwhelm, talagang proud ako sa kanya.”
The former King Alta hasn’t been able to watch many of the Altas’ regular season matches live in the San Juan Arena, but Thompson is quick to add that he catches the games on TV and catches replays, too. Thompson’s dream was to watch them live in the Mall of Asia Arena this Friday, but he’s got a semifinal match of his own to attend to: Ginebra versus the San Miguel Beermen.
“Makikibalita na lang ako. Mauuna ata game nila, kaya mapapanood ko pa sila sa TV!” he says.
And just like a kuya he is, Thompson shares some advice for the younger Altas as they face the battle ahead: “Pagbutihin lang nila. Maglaro lang sila nang parang brothers, doon sila humugot ng lakas.”
The Perpetual Altas face the San Beda Red Lions, while the Arellano Chiefs face the Mapua Cardinals in the semi-finals of #NCAASeason92 this Friday. Don’t miss it! Games start at 1:45 PM. live on ABS-CBN S+A. Livestream here.
