Perpetual stays alive after finally scoring one vs San Beda
LONG TIME COMING. After four years of trying, Perpetual finally has another playoff win against San Beda.

University of Perpetual Help has never triumphed over San Beda College in the playoffs in 12 years.

That drought has come to an end in the NCAA 92 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Starting strong and finishing even stronger, the Altas remained in the running after silencing the Red Lions, 87-83, on Friday at the San Juan Arena.

Gab Dagangon scored a career-high 27 points to finally once again grant the Las Pinas-based team a mark in the win column in the playoffs against San Beda. From 2012 to 2014, they were always ousted by the squad from Mendiola.

The fourth-year forward pumped in 11 of his total in the final frame, including the go-ahead basket over the disciplined defense of Javee Mocon that broke a tied tally of 83-all into an 85-83 Perpetual lead with 19.7 seconds to go.

In the ensuing possession, the Altas forced a miss off AC Soberano. Keith Pido then converted both of his charities to finish the job in their vanquishing of their opponents’ twice-to-beat advantage.

Bright Akhuetie posted a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double and Daryl Singontiko contributed 15 markers of his own to help Perpetual recover just in time from squandering a lead of as much as 14. “Kahit struggle, happy kami na naging successful kami,” coach Jimwell Gican said.

Gican was quick to add, however, that they are far from done. “It’s just one game. I-eenjoy namin, but we have to prepare harder for Game 2,” he said.

As a team, the Altas made good on a blistering 60 percent of their field goals. That much was evident right from tip-off as they got off to a hot start of 21-9 after the opening salvo.

Robert Bolick kept the Lions in the game, however, and poured in 21 points in the first two quarters alone. He was unable to add to his output in the second half, however, to see his team lose in the Final Four for only the second time in a decade.

Soberano chipped in 16 points for San Beda who still have one last crack at making their 11th Finals in a row on Tuesday.
