STANDOFF. Two San Beda Red Cubs and two Arellano Braves join MVP Troy Mallillin as the top five individual performers in the tournament.
Their season series may be over, but the rivalry rages on between San Beda High School and Arellano High School.
Their modern-day rivalry is evident even in the tournament’s Mythical Team which is made up of MVP Troy Mallillin of College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills together with Red Cubs Sam Abu Hijleh and Josh Tagala and Braves Guilmer Dela Torre and Aaron Fermin.
Junior Blazer Mallillin topped all players in Statistical Points (SPs) and was followed by Abu Hijleh and then Dela Torre – his closest competitors throughout the tournament.
Abu Hijleh and Mallillin teamed up in the frontcourt for San Beda who willed their way into yet another top-seed. On the other hand, Dela Torre and Fermin’s inside-outside connection played a key role in Arellano’s second straight playoff berth.
The Cubs and the Chiefs split their two meetings in the elimination round. In the Final Four, San Beda lost their twice-to-beat advantage before putting down Arellano once and for all.
Meanwhile, Tagala is also set to take home the Most Improved Player plum after rising from 20th in SPs in 2015 to fourth in SPs in 2016.
Tagala’s jump up by 16 spots gave him the win over Mallillin who jumped up by 11 spots from 12th in 2015 to first in 2016.
