Lyceum of the Philippines University opened the new year with a sweet sweep of the 92nd NCAA volleyball competition playdate against Emilio Aguinaldo College Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Intramuros-based squad emerged victorious on all fronts highlighted by a shocker dealt by the Junior Pirates to the erstwhile unbeaten Brigadiers in the high school play to start the day.
The Junior Pirates banked on the 20-point production of Valeriano Sasis to put a dent on the Brigadiers' record with a 25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, victory for its fourth straight win in as many outings.
LPU snapped EAC’s five-game winning run.
The Lady Pirates, on the other hand, rolled to their third straight victory for a share of the second spot with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-20, demolition of the listless Lady Generals.
Picking up from where they left off last month before the holiday break, LPU improved to 5-1 win-loss record tied with idle defending champion College of St. Benilde.
Skipper Cherilyn Sindayen, Czarina Orros and Christine Miralles logged in 12 points each for LPU. La Rainne Fabay added 10 markers for the Lady Pirates, who uncorked 40 attack points with Sindayen and Orros hitting 10 each.
Despite their easy win, head coach Emil Lontoc was far from satisfied with the way his players’ performance.
“Kailangan pa naming mag-step up pa kasi yung nakikita namin sa ensayo hindi namin nagagawa rito. Kanina ang pangit ng receive namin,” said Lontoc, whose squad is on the right track to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2011.
“Siguro kanina masyadong kumpiyansa sila na alam nilang hindi gaanong malakas ang kalaban,” he added.
The Lady Pirates will have another long break before their crucial matches against other semifinal contenders Perpetual Help on January 13, Arellano University on January 18 before closing the eliminations on a collision course with San Sebastian College on January 23.
The Lady Generals dropped to 0-7 record with only Jaylene Lumbo scoring in double figures with 11.
In men’s play, the Pirates evened their record at 3-3 with a 27-25, 25-20, 25-18, victory over the freefalling Generals.
Jhonel Badua and Joeward Presnede scored 14 points each for the LPU, which tied Mapua and San Sebastian College at the middle of the pack heading into the closing stretch of the elims.
EAC absorbed its seventh loss in as many outings.
