An explosive rematch of last year's title series is set Wednesday when San Sebastian College eyes to complete a sweep of the elimination round for an outright championship berth against the semifinals spot-seeking defending champion College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers in the 92nd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Stags are just a win away from clinching an outright championship berth with a thrice-to-beat advantage after hurdling their first eight game.
For SSC-R to get a free ride to the Finals, the Lady Stags must take down the squad that denied them the title last year in the scheduled 11:00 a.m. match.
The Recto-based squad last season also swept the elims to advance outright in the championship round only to be beaten thrice by CSB for the crown.
“Siyempre gustong-gusto na talaga naming silang makalaban. Hindi naman sa revenge pero gusto lang namin makabawi siyempre,” said SSC-R main hitter and reigning back-to-back Most Valuable Player Grethcel Soltones, who is looking to end her college career with a championship.
The Lady Stags are coming off a straight sets whipping of Lyceum of the Philippines University, 25-21, 25-19, 25-17, last Monday that formally eliminated the Lady Pirates in the semis race.
CSB is in a precarious situation at 6-2 win-loss record with the last two spots in the semis still up for grabs. Behind the Lady Blazers are San Beda (6-3) and Perpetual Help (5-3).
The Lady Blazers are looking not only to spoil a Lady Stags party but to also to formally clinch a seat in the Final Four, otherwise, they could fall in a situation where they would need to win in a playoff to advance.
A win by Perpetual Help against semis-bound Arellano University (7-1) at 12:30 p.m. will give the Lady Altas a playoff for a spot in the next round.
A loss will mean the Lady Chiefs seal the No. 2 seed while giving the Lady Blazers and the San Beda Red Spikers a free ride to the Final Four.
In the men’s play, Perpetual (7-1) battles Arellano U (6-2) at 2:00 p.m. for a twice-to-beat advantage in the semis while CSB (7-1) and SSC-R (3-5) collide at 9:30 a.m.
