Arellano University shuts the stepladder semifinals door for Perpetual Help.
Arellano University showed Perpetual Help the exit door and in the process gave defending champion College of St. Benilde and San Beda College a free ride to the stepladder semifinals with a 17-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-13, win Wednesday in the 92nd NCAA women’s volleyball competition elims at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Chiefs closed the elimination round with eight straight victories after dropping its opening game against unbeaten and Finals-bound San Sebastian College to finish at second spot for a twice-to-beat advantage in the stepladder semifinals.
“Kumbaga ang goal namin sa elimination nakuha na namin,” said AU coach Obet Javier. “Pero itong darating na laban mas crucial na ito so mas dapat na hindi kami pwedeng magkamali rito. Kaya sa practice namin bukas dapat mas mag concentrate kami.”
Jovielyn Prado nailed 15 points while Regine Arocha and Rialen Sante delivered 13 and 10 markers, respectively, for the Lady Chiefs, who will face the winner between CSB and San Beda College on Friday at the start of the stepladder semifinals.
SSC-R advanced to the Finals outright after a 9-game elims sweep armed with a thrice-to-beat advantage in the championship round.
The Lady Altas closed their season with a 5-4 win-loss card.
Graduating player Jamela Suyat and Lourdes Clemente scored 12 markers each while team captain Coleen Bravo had a forgettable final game for the Las Pinas-based squad with only four points.
In the men's match, Perpetual Help clinched a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four after beating Arellano University, 25-23, 25-14, 25-19, to tie College of St. Benilde at 8-1 win-loss record.
The Altas and Blazers will battle in a playoff on Friday for the no. 1 spot to face no. 4 seed Arellano U (6-3) while the loser will pair with third seed San Beda College (7-2).
