Coach Boyet: ‘When a door closed, gate ng San Beda nagbukas para sa akin’

Boyet Fernandez registered 35 wins and nine losses in the NCAA with San Beda College from 2013 to 2014.
He then took his talents to the PBA with rookie franchise NLEX and proceeded to get a record of 28-50 in two seasons.
Safe to say, that was quite the turnaround for the champion collegiate coach.
Fast forward to 2017 and Fernandez is back in Mendiola – ready to rediscover the magic that made him one of the best, if not the best, coaches in college as well as the PBA D-League.
And of course, the now 45-year-old is nothing but thankful for the chance to do so. As he put it, “Masayang-masaya ako kasi I’m the only coach who has been accepted back. Wala namang nakabalik na head coach ever since.”
Fernandez was glad to share that San Beda’s warm welcome back only lifted up his spirit which got beaten and battered with his struggles in the professional arena. “Akala ko, hindi ako mawe-welcome, but they welcomed me with open arms. Sabi nga, when a door closes, a window opens,” he shared.
He then continued, “But sa akin, buong gate ng San Beda yung nagbukas para sa akin. Kaya ang laki ng pasasalamat ko kasi na-feel ko agad yung suporta ng alumni tsaka ni boss MVP (Manny V. Pangilan).”
Thus far, the two-time NCAA champion coach’s return has gone swimmingly.
Early in the year, he led Cignal-San Beda to a dominant 12-3 championship run in the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup.
He then turned his full attention to the Red Lions who have just swept the elimination round of the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
Now, Fernandez and San Beda are three wins away from something which had only been done two times before - a sweep of the preseason.
Still, the returning Red Lions mentor is adamant that he has a lot more to prove. “Ang motivation ko rito sa pagbabalik ko sa San Beda is hopefully, I can lead them to back-to-back (championships). Medyo mahirap ngayon, pero sa tingin ko, kung tatrabahuin ko, tatrabahuin ng players ko, may chance kami,” he said.
