Keith Pido’s no Scottie Thompson – and that’s alright

Without a doubt, now-Ginebra star Scottie Thompson left a huge hole in University of Perpetual Help.

And he left a huge hole nobody expected to be filled soon enough.

That’s why when little-known Keith Pido did his best impression of “Mr. Triple-Double” a year ago, it was nothing but a pleasant surprise for everybody.

While his norms of 5.7 points, 3.9 assists, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.1 steals weren’t all that eye-popping, he was undoubtedly the engine that kept the Altas running all the way to the Final Four.

For Pido himself, however, he’s far from being he second coming of Thompson. “Laging sinasabi ng mga tao, ‘Uy! Ikaw yung susunod na Scottie!’ Pero wala e, malayo yun, Scottie yun,” he expressed.

He then continued, “Tao lang tayo.”

According to the Bacolod native, all he’s doing is helping his team win. “Kung ano lang yung magagawa ko, bigay-todo lang.”

Still, that statement in itself sounds like something Thompson would say.

That’s because, as it turns out, Pido learned the tricks of the trade from perhaps the greatest Perpetual player ever. “Siyempre, ginagawa ko rin naman yung mga ginagawa niya. Siyempre, tinuruan din naman niya ako,” he shared.

In fact, Pido spent most of his first three years in the NCAA as Thompson’s understudy.

And in no way did that bring him down. As he put it, “Sabi ko lang nun, tiyaga-tiyaga lang, pana-panahon lang din naman 'yan. Kapag wala na si Scottie, ako na papalit.”

Indeed, the incoming fourth-year guard has proven himself worthy to be the former NCAA MVP’s heir apparent.

That is even truer when Pido says his playing mantra is exactly the same as Thompson’s playing mantra. “Teammates muna bago sarili,” he expressed.

And now, he wants nothing more than to keep doing what his good friend and former teammate imparted – to help his team win. “Handang-handa na po ako sa kahit ako kasi wala namang ibang magdadala rito as point guard kundi ako,” he said.
