Coach Vergel’s challenge to Teytey: ‘Be the leader of JRU’

Going on three years now, Teytey Teodoro has been the face of Jose Rizal University.

Until now, however, he is yet to truly take the mantle as the Heavy Bombers’ team leader.

And that has long been the next step head coach Vergel Meneses has been waiting for from him.

Asked if his top gun has become the team leader with the departures of Jordan dela Paz and Paolo Pontejos, the longtime mentor answered, “Hindi pa rin e. Parang hindi pa siya totally committed.”

He also added, “Pasensya na, pero yun ang totoong nakikita ko.”

Meneses then went on to say that he wants nothing more than to see hustle from Shaw Boulevard’s scoring machine. “I don’t have problems with (Ervin) Grospe, I don’t have problems with (Gio) Lasquety, given na yung hardwork nila e. Si Teytey, sa tingin ko, he has to step up there,” he said.

He then continued, “Dapat alam niya sa sarili niya na parang, ‘Pare, ako yung leader dito.’ Parang ‘di pa niya tanggap e and he has to accept that kasi wherever he goes, yun ang pupuntahan ng JRU.”

More than the chances of the Heavy Bombers, the Philippine basketball legend also wants to see much more than scoring so that Teodoro will have a great shot for his future. As he shared, “Last time, we had a heart-to-heart talk and sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Honestly, do you think you can go to the pros?’ Kahit siya, hindi siya sure e.”

He then continued, “So sabi ko sa kanya, if you want to go to the pros, be the leader of this team. If they saw you diving for the ball, passing the ball, playing defense, then everybody will follow.”

Make no doubt about it, however, the incoming fourth-year Heavy Bomber is doing his best. “Medyo tina-try ko na rin namang mas maging vocal, pero yun nga, ‘di tayo sanay sa ganun. Pero alam ko na rin namang kailangan ko nang gampanan yung ganung role,” he expressed.

And even when he’s not being vocal, Teodoro has always had his play to do the talking. “Last three years, more on scoring lang talaga ako. Ngayon, hinahanapan na rin talaga ako ni coach ng rebounds, ng assists,” he said, talking about the change in his game for the upcoming season.

Good thing then that his JRU teammates are only willing to keep on helping him. “So far naman, tinutulungan pa rin ako ng teammates ko. So tulungan lang talaga,” he said.
