SEEING RED. San Beda was mentioned first on the other head coaches' lists of teams-to-beat.
There wasn’t even any question about it – San Beda College is the favorite to win it all again in the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Nine of the 10 head coaches mentioned the Red Lions first on their list of teams-to-beat in the preseason press conference on Monday at the MOA Arena.
“San Beda,” mentors Topex Robinson of Lyceum of the Philippines University, Jerry Codinera of Arellano University, Jeff Napa of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Jimwell Gican of University of Perpetual, Egay Macaraya of San Sebastian College-Recoletos, asst. Vic Lazaro of Jose Rizal University, asst. Ed Cordero of Mapua University, TY Tang of College of St. Benilde, and Ariel Sison of Emilio Aguinaldo College simply said.
Of course, only Boyet Fernandez did not mention San Beda. Instead, he said, “Thank you to the other coaches for saying we’re the team-to-beat. That’s more pressure to us and myself.”
Still, the nine head coaches have very good reason to believe so especially after the NCAA champions cleanly swept the recently-concluded 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
The Red Lions only lost Dan Sara and will be returning the championship-winning core of Robert Bolick, Javee Mocon, Davon Potts, Jomari Presbitero, and AC Soberano for Season 93.
San Beda will go all-out to live up to the expectations and will get its first chance to do so is on opening day, July 8 at the MOA Arena.
There, the defending champions battle season host San Sebastian College-Recoletos starting at 2:00 PM. A duel between Final Four teams Arellano University and Mapua University then follows at 4:00 PM.
The 93rd Season of the first and oldest collegiate league will be on S+A, S+A HD, and via livestream.
